There is no better way to spend Spring Break than in Disney World. Especially when you are invited guests.
The Floyd County Youth Symphony has been invited to perform in the Galaxy Palace Theater at 11:20 a.m. Monday. The 55 musicians, directors and chaperones left at 4 p.m. Friday for Orlando.
This is the third time the symphony has been invited to perform in Disney World. Participants will range in age from 8 to 17.
?This will be a great experience for the kids,? said Kathy Johnson, one of the group?s directors. ?Kids who have gone in the past say it is something they will remember for the rest of their lives.?
To be chosen to play at Disney World, groups had to send in an application and tape to Disney officials.
The Floyd County Youth Symphony is made up of two groups ? the mini orchestra and the philharmonic. In 2000, the mini-orchestra performed at Disney. This year, the group is made up of members from both groups.
Johnson said the Floyd County students will perform for 25 minutes. After that, their time will be spent enjoying Disney World. They are expected to return to Floyd County Wednesday afternoon.
?We have their agenda loaded. We are going to keep them as busy as we can,? Johnson said.
The Floyd County Youth Symphony has about 100 students involved. Musicians come from Floyd, Clark and Harrison counties. The symphony was organized in 1974 to give young musicians an opportunity to experience a challenging music environment.
Johnson said the group practices once a week and tryouts are always held the week after Labor Day.
Besides Johnson, the other two directors are Susan Pfeifer and Patrick O?Rourke. All three teach in the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corp.
?Disney always treats you like a member of their cast for the day,? Johnson said. ?They are very professional, the sound system is always perfect. It?s a special experience. It will be very positive. ?
