The competition is wide open because the 2006 winners did not return this year.

More than 2,000 triathletes are expected to compete in the Walt Disney World Triathlon at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground starting at 7 a.m. Sunday.

That would be the largest field in the four-year history of the event, according to Disney officials.

Thousands more people are expected for the Walt Disney World Triathlon Expo, which takes place today and Saturday, also at Fort Wilderness.

The actual triathlon starts with a 1.5K (.93 mile) swim at Clementine Beach, followed by a 56K (34.8 miles) bike ride, and capped off by a 10K (6.21 miles) run.

Despite the record number of entrants, last year's champions are not entered in this year's field.

The top returning finisher on the men's side is Kissimmee's Andrea Ugazio, who placed eighth last year. Celebration resident Richard Krupa, who finished ninth last year, also is entered.

As for the women, the top returning finisher is Tampa resident Svetlana Slocum, who placed sixth in 2006.

Also planned as part of the Walt Disney World Triathlon Weekend is the Disney World Kids' Duathlon.

The duathlon, which takes place Saturday at 7:30 a.m., gives children ages 7-14 a chance to compete in a running/biking competition, with distances depending on age.

I'd love to see the Kids' Duathlon. That's really cool!
